ADEA’s Commitment to Interprofessional Education (IPE) Continues
- ADEA published a report in the August issue of the Journal of Dental Education titled 20 Years Beyond the Crossroads: The Path to Interprofessional Education at U.S. Dental Schools. The report describes the progress in dental education regarding implementation of IPE efforts since the first national report on the subject was released in 1995.
- ADEA continued to be an active member of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) in 2015, with ADEA President and CEO Rick Valachovic serving as president. The two IPEC Institutes, held in the spring and the fall each year, continue to sell out.
- In 2015, two webinars in the Leading Conversations series focused on IPE. In August ADEA presented All Together Now: Realizing IPE at Academic Health Centers, which focused on the best practices for launching IPE at educational institutions. In October ADEA offered ADEA CCI Spotlight: Fresh Approaches to Assessment for Dental Educators, which was developed from programming at the 2015 ADEA CCI Liaisons Summer Meeting.

Demand Grows for ADEA Training Programs
- The ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation (ADEA CCI) in Dental Education Liaisons held their annual meeting in June. A planning committee of Liaisons developed the programming, which focused on assessment. Attendance increased 40% over the 2014 meeting.
- The ADEA/AAL Chairs and Academic Administrators Management Program (CAAMP) includes one-on-one coaching for department chairs, program directors and academic managers. CAAMP had its highest enrollment in 2015 with 65 participants.
- The ADEA/AAL Compass Program for Academic Advancement is an interprofessional course for early- and mid-career faculty. In 2015, the previously onsite programs were combined into four live distance-learning sessions, with a record attendance of 108 participants. Attendees interacted with colleagues from pharmacy, allied health, physical therapy, dentistry, public health and nursing.
- ADEA/AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) provides early career faculty, private practitioners transitioning into dental education and experienced faculty with the tools to improve student learning. Annual attendance has risen from 23 to almost 90 in nine years, highlighting the need and desire for qualified faculty.
- ADEA/Colgate/AAL Institute for Allied Health Educators (IAHE) enhances the learning environment for allied health faculty. Changes to the course in 2015 encouraged engagement and fostered network opportunities. As a result, the 316 participants in the 2015 IAHE experienced the course as both active learners and contributors.
