New ADEA Division of Professional Development Established

In pursuit of ADEA’s goal to foster excellence and innovation in teaching, learning and leadership for dental educators, ADEA created a new Division of Professional Development. The new division conceptualizes, designs and directs a range of in-person training programs and conferences, web-based knowledge resources and virtual learning opportunities, while establishing and maintaining a community of continuous learning and pedagogical innovation. Diane Hoelscher, D.D.S., M.S., joined ADEA in July as the Senior Vice President for Professional Development.

ADEA CCI Creates Workgroup With the ADHA

Since mid-2014, an ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation (ADEA CCI) in Dental Education workgroup with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) has been assisting in the creation of a leadership course for dental hygiene educators. It combines a single two-day, face-to-face session with online networking and instruction to make the course affordable and accessible. The 12-week course will begin piloting in August 2016.

New Phase V Program Offers Leadership Development Opportunities

In 2015 the Leadership Institute Alumni Association (LIAA) collaborated with ADEA to create an exciting new concept—Phase V, so named as the new extension of the four phases of the Leadership Institute. The program was designed to invigorate leadership development, stretch thinking, push potential and rejuvenate the networks and relationships that are hallmarks of the ADEA Leadership Institute. The inaugural three-day Phase V meeting occurred in January 2016. Leadership Institute alumni truly contributed to the initial success of the Phase V Fund, donating generously.

ADEA Leadership Institute Celebrates 15 Years

The ADEA Leadership Institute celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2015. The yearlong program is as successful and valuable as ever, with a record number of applicants for the Class of 2017. Over 330 Fellows have graduated from the Institute and hold positions in dental education ranging from department chairs to program directors to deans of dental schools.

ADEA Begins to Re-envision the ADEAGies Foundation

Early in 2015 we conducted a feasibility planning study to help us set a new course for achieving the ADEAGies Foundation’s mission, vision and goal of serving ADEA members and the dental education community. As a result, we have made significant progress in establishing a multi-year plan to implement a new and broader vision for the ADEAGies Foundation, including expanding its profile as the philanthropic arm of ADEA and as a grantmaking foundation.

ADEA Collaboration With ADEE Moves Forward

In 2014, ADEA and the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) created a special interest group (ADEE-ADEA SIG) to strengthen collaboration and cross-learnings between the two organizations. In 2015, the ADEE-ADEA SIG convened in Boston during the 2015 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition and again in Szeged, Hungary during the ADEE annual meeting. Program planning is underway for a two-day conference to be held at Kings College in London in May 2017. This event will be a working meeting focused on bringing together dental educators to discuss topics such as interprofessional education and assessment from an international perspective.
