- ADEA is a member of the Interprofessional Professionalism Collaborative (IPC). In 2017, ADEA staff contributed to a manuscript describing the development, testing, and application of an interprofessional professionalism assessment tool, and co-presented a workshop on IPE at the 2017 Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry Externship Educators meeting in November.
- ADEA is a sponsor of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education, which brings together stakeholders from multiple nations and professions to network, discuss and illuminate issues within health professional education. One of the three Forum Co-Chairs is ADEA Member Caswell A. Evans, D.D.S., M.P.H., Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Services, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. ADEA is a forum sponsor, and Richard Valachovic, D.M.D., M.P.H., ADEA President and CEO, is a member of the forum.

ADEA Chapters Receive the Tools to Grow
The primary aim of ADEA Chapters is to cultivate interest in academic dental careers across the dental profession now and in the future. In May, ADEA unveiled the ADEA Chapter Toolkit for Students, Residents and Fellows. The toolkit includes information and resources to guide chapter creation, member recruitment, fundraising and planning events that will raise awareness of academic dental careers. In addition, ADEA conducted a survey of chapter leaders, the results of which showed an increase in the number of chapters across North America as well as more involvement from the allied dental community.
ADEA Founding Sponsor of National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Action Collaborative ON CLINICIAN WELL-BEING AND RESILIENCE
To address the growing issue of clinician burnout, National Academy of Medicine (NAM) launched the Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-being and Resilience. ADEA is an inaugural sponsor of this network of more than 50 organizations committed to reversing trends in clinician burnout, and submitted a commitment statement to combat burnout in the dental education community.
Health Professions Week Gains Traction in Second Year
ADEA participated in the second annual Health Professions Week in November and was among the 21 health professions represented. Over 6,300 students registered for the event (compared with over 4,000 registrants in 2016), 44% of whom were high school students.
Members Take Advantage of ADEA’s Professional Development Offerings
ADEA provides professional development for our members through a host of programs and initiatives. In addition to the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, where extensive opportunities for professional development are available, leadership development programs include the ADEA Leadership Institute, the ADEA Summer Program for Emerging Academic Leaders, and the ADEA Allied Dental Faculty Leadership Development Program.
